What should I do if I find a turtle?

If you find a turtle outside, leave it alone. Turtles stay in a very small area their entire life. If they are removed from that area, they can spend their entire lives trying to return to where they consider home. So, unless the turtle is sick or injured, it is best to leave them where they are.

If you find a sick or injured turtle, please call 202-723-5730. If you do transport the turtle, be sure to make a note of the EXACT location so once the turtle has been rehabbed, he or she can be returned to the place they were found in.
