Dr. Penny Coder
Vice President of Medicine
Dr. Penny Coder is the Vice President of Medicine at the Humane Rescue Alliance. She leads the Shelter Medicine department and oversees Community Medicine initiatives in DC.
Dr. Coder graduated veterinary school from the University of Missouri in 2014. She started her career in shelter medicine by working with a local community cat organization while still in veterinary school. She completed a shelter medicine internship at Young-Williams Animal Shelter in Knoxville, Tennessee, and continued her career as the Director of Medicine at the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin. Prior to joining HRA, she specialized in high-quality, high-volume surgery and expanding access to veterinary care in underserved communities in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. She came to HRA as a staff veterinarian before becoming the Vice President of Medicine.
Dr. Coder lives in DC with her wife, three dogs, and two cats. In her free time, she runs with her husky and tends to her vegetable garden.
