This morning, the Humane Rescue Alliance dedicated a play yard for our dogs in honor of the late Tae Bennett, an HRA team member who passed away on April 4. Tae was a beloved animal caregiver who dedicated his life to giving his love and attention to the District's most vulnerable animals.
It was both an emotional memorial and a joyful celebration that brought smiles and tears alike. We were honored to welcome his family, including his two-year-old daughter Skylar, to the event and share this celebration with them. The program opened with HRA President and CEO Lisa LaFontaine’s tribute to Tae and was followed by the ribbon cutting of the yard.
"Tae has left a legacy that is far bigger than he ever realized," she said. "Literally thousands of animals passed through his care and are now living in families throughout our region."
Barbara (who goes by Babbs) was the last dog Tae worked with as part of HRA’s Shelter Scholars program. As a one year old living at our New York Avenue adoption center, she had little manners and spent more than two months looking for her home. Thanks to his hard work and devotion, she was adopted last month.
As a special "thank you," Barbara's adopter brought her back to test out the new yard. We think she approves of the upgrade. After the ceremony, Tae’s personal and professional families then gathered to share memories and food, while HRA staff distributed fresh catnip and pupscicles to shelter residents.
