Help us Clear the Shelters 2017

The Humane Rescue Alliance will once again join NBC4 to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters third annual nationwide pet adoption drive. HRA will offer the public fee-waived adoptions on Saturday, August 19, 2017 as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets.

Clear the Shelters comes after last year’s highly successful event, which resulted in nearly 54,000 pets finding new homes through an unprecedented partnership between the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations and hundreds of animal shelters located all across the country and in Puerto Rico. The nationwide day of action literally emptied dozens of animal shelters across the country and inspired local communities to take action and open their homes to animals in need.

Bringing Pets and People Together at HRA

It won't matter if you're #TeamCat or #TeamDog because on August 19, when you adopt from the Humane Rescue Alliance all adoption fees are waived! Both adoption centers, 1201 New York Avenue NE and 71 Oglethorpe Street NW, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all standard adoption procedures apply.

What to Expect

  • In addition to a fun, exciting day, it's a busy one! Be prepared to wait before meeting and taking your new animal home.
  • High temperatures! Shaded areas with misting fans to keep you cool, along with free bottles of water will be provided.

Adoption 101

  • Must have a current, government issued photo ID.
  • Must be 18 years or older to adopt.
  • Children 12 and under who live in the household must meet the animal before an adoption can be finalized.
  • Different members of the same household may not adopt multiple animals, with the exception of animals that may already be adopted in pairs.
  • We are not able to perform an introduction between your resident dog and the dog you are interested in adopting on August 19. We will not place dogs on hold to perform an introduction at a later date—an exception for this event.
  • Adoption fees are waived, but please be prepared for the following costs. All major credit cards and exact cash accepted.
    • Mandatory dog licenses for DC residents ($15.00)
    • Cardboard cat carrier, if you do not have your own carrier ($5.00)
    • E-collar for animals who were recently spayed or neutered ($10.00)

Available animals can be seen at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt. And potential adopters can visit NBCWashington.com to access more information about Clear the Shelters, including the full list of local participating animal shelters.
