Medical Center Update

Due to unforeseen staffing concerns, the Medical Center will not be offering veterinary or surgical appointments until further notice. We encourage pet owners to utilize our walk-in vaccine clinic, which will operate as usual.

Join Our Team

HRA is recruiting for several positions for our medical team. We are looking for compassionate individuals that share our belief that all animals, whether owned or in the care of our shelter, deserve the highest level of care possible, and will go the extra mile to ensure they get it. Our Medical Center is a busy one, serving several thousand shelter patients and close to 8,000 patients in our public hospital each year. Learn more and apply at

Care for Shelter Animals

The Medical Center’s team of veterinarians, volunteer veterinary specialists, and technicians provide medical care for the animals housed at our adoption centers as well as community cats and Help Out, Partner, and Engage (HOPE) program recipients.

Care for Companion Animals of Income Qualified DC Residents

The Medical Center is the only local veterinary facility that offers discounted, full-service care to income-qualified residents of the District of Columbia; Calvert, Charles, Frederick, Montgomery, and Prince George’s counties in Maryland; Arlington, Clarke, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Warren counties in Virginia; the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park in Virginia; and Jefferson County, West Virginia. To qualify, clients must have an income of $55,000 per year or less and be able to show a photo identification.

Without its help, the more than 5,000 income-qualified patients the clinic’s treats annually might be unable to care for their animal companions when they become sick or injured.

Training for Veterinary Students

The Humane Rescue Alliance and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech (VMCVM) launched a strategic partnership to provide expanded education for veterinary students and an increased capacity for quality veterinary services to the Washington, DC region. The agreement established an innovative model in veterinary medicine, education, and animal welfare. LEARN MORE
