Junior Volunteer Program at Capacity

Please check back in January 2017

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for D.C. animals. Our Junior Volunteer program is currently at capacity. Please check this page again in January 2017. In the meantime, the basic parameters of the program are listed below to assist in planning your service activities for the new year.
There is a $50 non-refundable application fee, as such please review the details and requirements of the program carefully to ensure this program is a good fit.

  • The Junior Volunteer Program is open to responsible, mature youth between the ages of 12 and 18.
  • Junior volunteers do their volunteer service alongside a parent or guardian. The parent/guardian trained to participate must be present for all of a junior volunteer’s service.
  • Junior volunteers must complete 8 hours per month, for at least 6 months. (Can’t make that commitment? Learn more about our great off-site projects available instead.)
  • There are a few limits on the amount of animal handling a junior volunteer may do. For example, a junior volunteer may not handle the leash on a dog walk, but accompanies parent/guardian on walk.
  • The Junior Volunteer Program takes place at our Oglethorpe Adoption Center, located at 71 Oglethorpe NW. (Short bus ride or 20-minute walk from Takoma Metro on red line. Free parking also available.)
  • An application fee scholarship is available to those who qualify; details on the application page
