Humane Rescue Alliance Debuts Public Service Announcement Featuring Max Scherzer and John Wall

The Humane Rescue Alliance debuts a new public service announcement this spring, as two of Washington, DC’s top sports stars lend a hand to promote pet adoption. Washington Nationals All-Star and Cy Young Award Winner Max Scherzer and Washington Wizards four-time All-Star point guard John Wall appear in HRA’s “Every Rescue Animal Has a Story” campaign.

“We are so proud that the professional athletes in our city - like John Wall and Max Scherzer – are willing to use their public platform to speak up for those that have no voice – the homeless animals in our care,” said Lisa LaFontaine, President and CEO of  HRA. “By bringing awareness to the programs and services HRA offers, they are helping make our city a better place for animals.”

The public service announcement was recorded at HRA’s Oglethorpe Street Adoption Center. In addition to the PSA’s descriptions of HRA’s life-saving programs, Max and Erica Scherzer, along with their three dogs Rocco, Rafi, and Bo; and John Wall, with his dogs, Southside and Raleigh, appear in the video. Both the Scherzers and Wall have supported HRA in a variety of ways.

“Animals – and especially rescue animals – are an important part of our lives,” said Scherzer. “My wife Erica and I are proud to work with the Humane Rescue Alliance to help find homes for the dogs and cats that so desperately need them.” After filming the PSA, the Scherzers funded adoption fees to expedite adoptions of HRA’s shelter residents, enabling the organization to make room incoming animals displaced by the hurricanes. The Scherzers' generosity resulted in more than 100 animals from hurricane-affected areas to be transported and adopted in Washington, DC.

For John Wall, filming the PSA was a continuation of his support for HRA. The Wizards All-Star has included the Humane Rescue Alliance in his “Back to School” community events for the past two years, helping create awareness for the programs and services HRA provides to the public. The John Wall Family Foundation also generously donated needed funds to support HRA’s community outreach.

“The companionship of dogs has always been an important part of my life and I am proud to help encourage others to discover the joy of pet ownership through my work with the Humane Rescue Alliance,” said Wall. “HRA works tirelessly to find homes and provide care for the animals in our city and I support their continuous efforts to save the lives of homeless pets.”
